How I Met Your Mother Celebrates Its 20th Anniversary

It has been two decades since audiences were first introduced to Ted Mosby and his group of friends navigating life and love in New York City. Created by Craig Thomas and Carter Bays, How I Met Your Mother is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

The show was quick to stand out for its unique storytelling structure, heartfelt themes, and running gags that became part of pop culture. Reflecting on the milestone, Craig Thomas described the experience as surreal, noting that 2030, the year when Ted sits down to tell his kids the story, is now just five years away.

“Catching up to 2030 feels so surreal,” he told TVLine, adding, “We were writing as these ‘older, wiser narrators,’ imagining what parenthood felt like for Bob Saget’s version of Ted.”

The show has remained an integral part of the creators’ and cast’s lives, with star Josh Radnor, who played Ted, joining Thomas on the rewatch podcast How We Made Your Mother.

Craig Thomas Expresses Regret Over Deleted Robin–Ted Scene

During his conversation with TVLine, How I Met Your Mother co-creator Craig Thomas also reflected on a deleted Robin-Ted scene from the divisive series finale, Last Forever.

The finale follows Ted revealing the Mother’s identity, who is later revealed to have passed away six years earlier from an unspecified illness. After hearing their father’s story, his kids, Penny and Luke, encourage him to pursue Robin. Realizing he still has feelings for her, Ted eventually goes to Robin’s apartment with the blue French horn.

Thomas revealed that the finale originally included a deleted scene that might have convinced some viewers that Ted and Robin were truly meant to be. He expressed regret over cutting it.

Network time constraints is probably the main answer to that… I think it’s a great scene. We were wildly long, and I also wish I could go back in time and ask for two hours for that finale instead of just an hour and change.

He explained that the scene’s message was tricky to balance, as some viewers might have found the enduring connection between Ted and Robin, while others worried it made Robin seem sad or unhappy. Despite the challenges, Thomas said he wishes the scene had been included. It is now available in the DVD box set.
