The Last Witch Hunter Ending Explained: How Does It Set Up Michael Caine’s Return for Sequel?

The Last Witch Hunter not only speculates on the return of Michael Caine’s character, but it also solidifies its stance that Caine WILL return as Dolan in The Last Witch Hunter 2.

At the end of the first film, Kaulder (Vin Diesel) defeats the Witch Queen and takes out her still beating heart. However, destroying the heart would also mean that he would kill himself. Chloe (Rose Leslie) convinces him to keep the still-beating heart with himself because there are bigger and more evil threats that the world needs saving from.

The organization of “Axe and Cross” was arrested and disbanded for its secrecy during the final moments of the film, and Dolan (Michael Caine) comes in. Being a trusted friend who had helped Kaulder in his journey, Dolan decides to postpone his retirement and join Kaulder and Chloe in their quest to continue fighting alongside the duo.

Naturally, the sequel would likely explore the trio working together as a team and trying to fight monsters from beyond this world, and save humanity.

What Happened to Michael Kaine’s 36th Dolan in The Last Witch Hunter?

Throughout the movie, it was Dolan’s wish to retire, and the Kaulder project was supposed to be his last outing before retirement. However, helping Kaulder in his quest and helping him defeat the Witch Queen made Dolan realize something.

The world still had plenty of evil things lurking about. From monsters to terrors in the night, the world of The Last Witch Hunter is riddled with demons beyond the ordinary, and humanity needs every last effort in hopes of restoring peace.

Hence, in a moment of confidence, Dolan emerges during the final moments of the film to stand beside Vin Diesel’s Kaulder and Rose Leslie’s Chloe.

The final scenes of the movie show Kaulder, Chloe, and Dolan forming a new, more modern team to face the threats that riddle this world. Naturally, there would be no The Last Witch Hunter 2 without the return of Michael Caine.

Back in October 2023, Michael Caine retired from Hollywood, citing that his old age (he was 90 at the time) was the reason for his retirement. However, another article by Variety now states that the actor might be coming out of his retirement for The Last Witch Hunter 2.

According to the report, a deal hasn’t been finalized yet between Caine and the production company of the movie. However, considering the importance of Caine’s character and how the 2015 film sets up a sequel quite perfectly, Caine’s return has been heavily rumored (and much hyped about).
