Novel readers might already be able to figure out the dynamics from the trailer, but if you’re planning to watch The Housemaid in theaters, here’s a detailed and spoiler-free breakdown.
Breaking Down The Housemaid Trailer: Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried’s Dark Thriller
The trailer begins with Amanda Seyfried’s Nina having a breakdown in a car, followed by an intimate scene of Sydney Sweeney’s character with a male figure, and then a fleet of police cars pulling up to the house at night.
Brandon Sklenar’s Andrew Winchester stands behind an ambulance with his daughter sitting next to him, and this montage unfolds with Sabrina Carpenter’s Please Please playing in the background.
So, we’re already off to an intense start! After the jumbled cuts, we see a linear scene of Millie entering the Winchester house and being greeted warmly by Nina. The former is interviewed for being a housemaid and is shown around the home.
The Winchester abode looks high-end, and Millie has to do basic things for the family, such as cleaning and cooking. But then we see some tension between her and Nina, who stares her down through a mirror. There are close-ups of knives, pills, and you soon learn that Millie and Andrew are having an affair.
In the final few seconds of the trailer, there are sinister smiles, bloodied knives, burning papers, and women covered in blood. Seyfried’s Nina seems to have deceptive yet composed expressions, and there’s just something about her smile and posture that feels so calculated.
Meanwhile, Millie throws away her glasses after the interview, suggesting that she is also putting up an act of servitude. Essentially, you’d be confused about who’s the victim and who’s the culprit from the trailer itself, which is great for building intrigue and drawing the viewers in.
So, what do you think about the first look? Does it make you want to watch The Housemaid?
The Housemaid will release in theaters on December 19, 2025 (USA).
