Prime Video’s brand-new thriller series, The Girlfriend, is full of plot twists and shocks that one might not see coming from miles away. One of the less shocking scenes is when Olivia Cooke’s Cherry Laine gets arrested during her engagement party as a suspect in the vandalism at Laura Sanderson’s (Robin Wright) art gallery.
The night before her engagement party, she goes to her mom’s place to spend the night there. Late at night, she sneaks out and goes to Laura’s art gallery and writes “Liar” with black spray paint all over the paintings. She also burns out the eyes of one of the portraits with a cigarette.
Cherry leaves her boyfriend, Daniel’s (Laurie Davidson) childhood teddy bear, at Laura’s doorstep. Any suspicions Laura has about who is responsible for the vandalism are confirmed because of the teddy bear. Laura reports Cherry to the police and shows up at the engagement party minutes before the police’s arrival.
The Girlfriend: How Does Daniel React to Cherry’s Arrest?

Since the beginning of The Girlfriend, it is clear that both Laura and Cherry wanted their hold on Daniel. Once Cherry becomes Daniel’s girlfriend, Laura’s hold on him begins to slip. By the end of the six-episode show, Cherry successfully manages to make Laura the villain in Daniel’s eyes.
When Laura shows up at Daniel and Cherry’s engagement party, the former wants to talk to his mother, but Cherry asks him to stay with her. Minutes later, Cherry is arrested, and Daniel is left reeling. Later that night, he shows up at Laura’s place and confronts her about Cherry’s arrest.
Laura insists that Cherry is not who he thought she was, but Daniel is not willing to listen to anything. He goes on his own tirade about how he feels suffocated by his mother’s constant need to control him. He even claims that from the clothes he wears to the subjects he studied, he only ever did what Laura wanted.
Daniel also says that he always did his best to become Laura’s “golden boy” because he was afraid that he would make her sad or disappointed. Laura is heartbroken to hear all this and asks him to stay just for a bit with her before he goes back to Cherry. Laura mixes sleeping pills in his drink to make him hear what she had on her phone, but is interrupted by Cherry’s arrival.
Does Laura Kill Cherry at the End of The Girlfriend?

At the start of Episode 1 of The Girlfriend, the dialogue makes it seem as though Laura kills Cherry. However, at the end of Episode 6, viewers learn that it is not Cherry who dies. Instead, Laura dies at the hands of her own son. The whole thing comes to an end after a complicated battle between the three.
It starts when Laura tries to fend Cherry away with a knife, hoping she would leave. They are by the pool when Daniel regains consciousness and starts making his way towards the sound of the commotion. As soon as Cherry hears Daniel’s voice, she deliberately slashes her palm on Laura’s knife to get Daniel’s sympathy.
Laura pushes Cherry into the pool, and they start trying to drown each other. Cherry lets Laura overpower her once she sees Daniel coming down the stairs. Daniel also jumps into the pool and, in his attempt to save Cherry, he accidentally keeps Laura’s head underwater for far too long. Consequently, Laura dies.
