The Conjuring Prequel Reportedly in Works But James Wan Might Walk Away This Time

It’s been barely a few days since the release of Michael Chaves’ The Conjuring: Last Rites on September 5, and Warner Bros. is already eyeing a prequel to The Conjuring franchise. According to Puck News, this report comes in the wake of the latest installment’s record-breaking success.

However, the alleged report arrives not without its fair share of drama. Because, according to the outlet, producer James Wan, who launched the franchise as director of the first two films, is reportedly in a heated pay dispute with the studio. Therefore, even if The Conjuring franchise gets a prequel, Wan won’t be returning.

Although James Wan has handed over the directorial torch to Michael Chaves, who helmed the last two Conjuring

films, Wan served as a producer. So now, following the pay dispute, it seems that Wan might not even return as a producer for the Conjuring prequel.

The Conjuring: Last Rites Breaks Records with Biggest Global Horror Debut

Meanwhile, The Conjuring: Last Rites has become a huge success at the box office, setting a new record for horror movies worldwide. As the ninth entry in Warner Bros. and New Line’s paranormal franchise, this film earned $194 million in its very first weekend, following Sunday’s already massive estimate of $187 million worldwide (via Variety).

Now, with the staggering first weekend earnings, Michael Chaves’ movie has already beaten the previous record set by 2017’s It, which had collected $190 million. This makes Last Rites the biggest global opening for a horror film in history. Plus, the movie marking the Warrens’ last chapter, also performed incredibly well overseas.

With $110 million collected internationally in its opening, The Conjuring: Last Rites now holds the record for the largest international debut for a horror film. Before this, IT: Chapter Two had the title with $92 million. Additionally, the movie has already become a big win for Warner Bros., based on its budget of $55 million.

Directed by Michael Chaves and starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, Last Rites has also added to the studio’s streak of box office hits after several recent flops. Alongside other successful releases like Superman, Sinners, and Weapons, Last Rites has helped Warner Bros. cement its strong comeback.
