Original Dragon Ball Editor Calls Daima ‘Trash Anime’, But His New Idea Is What Every Fan Wants

Torishima is the former editor of Akira Toriyama for his Dragon Ball manga, and has brutally rejected Dragon Ball Daima. The statement was revealed during a YouTube stream in which the ex-editor commented that a ‘Vegeta story’ would be better than Daima.

Torishima not only helped Toriyama with Dragon Ball but also with his earlier work, Dr. Slump. Needless to say, he is an important entity when it comes to the success achieved by the franchise. However, his criticisms have always been too harsh.

Dragon Ball‘s Ex-Editor Brutally Criticizes Dragon Ball DAIMA

On 15th September 2025, KosoKoso livestreamed an interview with Torishima. According to a translation, the former Dragon Ball editor had stated:

It would be better to produce a Vegeta story than Dragon Ball Super. Dragon Ball Daima was a trash anime.

Of course, there have always been allegations about Daima being a slightly underperforming anime. However, calling it outright trash might be going too far. Torishima has always thrown out cutthroat opinions. He has stated several other negative things about Dragon Ball

, like it should have ended with Frieza, or the author was clearly struggling. In fact, even Eiichiro Oda could not escape his ire, and he termed One Piece as a series that would not take off.

Of course, Daima also has its fair share of issues, including slow pacing, a lack of action scenes, and a simplistic and predictable plot that relies too heavily on the nostalgia factor of the original franchise. The expectations that fans had of the series clashed with its childish tone, which felt too catered towards a younger demographic.

Torishima’s Idea About a Vegeta-Focused Anime Is What Fans Crave

Vegeta is probably the one Dragon Ball character who should be lobbying for justice by now. In each and every arc, he tries to beat a villain, only for Goku to save the day. Torishima might be right about a Vegeta-focused series, since it would finally give the character the spotlight that he deserves.

An anime on Vegeta would provide a refreshing POV to the ages-old Dragon Ball anime. Either his early years could be reiterated through his lens, or new adventures could be told from his POV. A Vegeta spinoff might even offer gritty action with plenty of intense drama. Additionally, it could also show Vegeta’s character development from being a cold-hearted bounty murderer to a protector of Earth and Goku’s ally.

Vegeta’s arc of pride, ego, and eventual redemption is extremely interesting, and it’s high time that he receives the attention he deserves. The fresh storytelling opportunity is something that Toei is in dire need of at the moment.
