My Best Friend’s Wedding 2 could reunite Julia Roberts and co-star John Corbett of Sex and the City fame in an unexpected way. The first film had an alternate ending that would’ve reversed the cathartic ending that Cameron Diaz’s Kimmy had after confronting Julia Roberts’ Julianne, speaking her mind against the latter’s terrible behaviour towards her in a powerful scene.
The film’s ending originally had Julianne find love with a wedding guest played by Corbett. According to an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the cast and crew discussed the original ending and how Diaz didn’t like it. She stated:
If Kimmy didn’t stand up for herself, it felt different for the end of the story. It wasn’t as gratifying.
The iconic ending that was immensely satisfying to audiences was the result of a reshoot. Looks like Julianne had a redemption arc, too, as she apologised to Kimmy.
My Best Friend’s Wedding Sequel Is in the Works
Julia Roberts is ready to continue the story of Julianne, as she has confirmed that she is in talks to star in a My Best Friend’s Wedding
Celine Song’s romcoms have earned her much-deserved accolades and praise. With Past Lives, she cemented herself as someone who could tell powerful, intimate stories, and her work on Materialists proved she could tap into big stars like Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal.
She would be the perfect choice to helm the female-centric story of Julianne as she navigates a life of finding the right partner, much like in Materialists.
The original My Best Friend’s Wedding was a box office hit upon release in the summer of 1997, earning close to $300 million at the box office and ranking as the ninth-highest-grossing domestic release of the year. Here are a few key details about the film.
The film earned three Golden Globe nominations, in best musical and comedy and acting nods for Roberts and Everett. While promoting her new film After the Hunt, Julia Roberts and director Luca Guadagnino had interesting updates to give.
Luca Guadagnino Is Ready to Direct Julia Roberts in the Sequel
In an interview with Variety, the cast spoke about the My Best Friend’s Wedding sequel while promoting their film. Luca Guadagnino, the director of After the Hunt, chimed in when asked if he would direct the Julia Roberts film:
In a second.
Currently, Guadagnino and Roberts are getting ready to release their Amazon MGM Studios-produced flick on October 10, 2025.
We can only judge how good the director is at bringing the best out of Roberts after we see the film, but given his filmography, it will certainly be interesting to watch him do the sequel.
