Matt Reeves recently spoke to Josh Horowitz from Happy Sad Confused, regarding the future of his The Batman movies. In the interview with Horowitz, Reeves spoke about his wish to make more sequels:
I always wanted, in the movies, to make sure that – let’s say we get to make three and I have no idea – but if we get to make three, I always wanted the movies to be focused on his character.
Reeves also shared that The Batman 2 will feature a villain in a new light that hasn’t been explored before. On June 28, 2025, Reeves shared a post on Instagram, tagging co-writer Mattson Tomlinson with the caption “Partners in Crime (Fighters),” giving fans a teaser of the finished The Batman 2 script. Since then, fan speculation on the plot and the villains has been sky-high.
Matt Reeves Wants to Focus on Bruce Wayne’s Character
During his conversation with Horowitz, Reeves went on to explain that he never wanted to “lose Rob as the center of the story”, picking the “right villain,” as he puts it, that would allow him to dive deeper into Bruce Wayne’s past and life. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Matt Reeves elaborates on his approach to the script:
You wanna keep the surprise so the fans can have the fun experience that I always love going to the movies, which was to go and be surprised. He’s Batman, so if he [Robert Pattinson] doesn’t like it, not good. So, I was super excited because I thought that he really would [like it] because the things that it does for his character, for Batman, and for Bruce has never been done before in this way.
Reeves admitted that The Batman film was more about Batman than it was about Bruce Wayne, and intends to change that with the second film.
The Batman movies in the past that most often gave us the same trauma-filled Bruce Wayne as Batman. The Nolan trilogy is the closest we’ve gotten to a deep exploration of Bruce Wayne’s character and past.
We’ve seen villains face off against Batman and also attack the man underneath the mask, like Ra’s al Ghul, Bane, Harvey Dent, and The Riddler, to name a few. Things are still kept a secret, with many fans speculating who the villain might be.
With Reeves stating that his choice for a villain is one that ties in deeply with Bruce Wayne, could it be Hugo Strange? Hugo Strange has a strong connection with Wayne’s past and is a criminal mastermind who can bring Bruce Wayne to his knees.
Excitement is constantly stirring, and we’re here to deliver the exciting updates regarding The Batman 2.
