Matt Reeves has elaborated on his approach to The Batman 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the revered reinterpretation of the character, which has faced numerous delays already. In an interview with THR, Reeves emphasized the sequel aims to do one thing right that hasn’t been done on the big screen yet, potentially striking the balance between Batman and Bruce.
You wanna keep the surprise so the fans can have the fun experience that I always love going to the movies, which was to go and be surprised. He’s Batman, so if he [Robert Pattinson] doesn’t like it, not good. So, I was super excited because I thought that he really would [like it] because the things that it does for his character, for Batman, and for Bruce has never been done before in this way.
As of now, only a select individuals have been given access to the script, including Robert Pattinson, whose reaction to the story lived up to Reeves’ expectations.
Matt Reeves Anticipated Robert Pattinson’s Reaction to The Batman 2
With the sequel set to expand on the character’s detective prowess, much like the first movie, for Reeves, it was important that Pattinson loved this new direction, which also aims to give Bruce Wayne the spotlight.
The director then confirmed Pattinson indeed loved the new storyline, adding that the reception to his continuation of The Batman, which took him a prolonged period, was encouraging.
And I had a feeling he would respond in this way, the fact that he did was incredibly encouraging. And of course, I’m nervous every time anyone reads it because we put all this passion into it but you hope people connect to what you’re trying to do.
Considering James Gunn and Peter Safran have kept a very high standard for anything DC Elseworlds and given how much effort Reeves and Matt Tomlin have invested in the sequel’s story, there’s good reason to be excited.
What Matt Reeves’ Comments Mean for The Batman Sequel
Coming down to Reeves’ comments about exploring Bruce and Batman in a way that has not been done yet, this likely refers to giving both Bruce Wayne and Batman equal weight in the narrative. The Batman, for legitimate reasons, held back from giving us the traditional Bruce Wayne that fans have grown accustomed to.
Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight, one of the best CBMs of all time, didn’t nail the balance between Bruce and Batman either, as Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne ultimately stood out more than his Batman.
The Long Halloween, the major inspiration for Reeves’ iteration of the character, remains revered for giving both Bruce’s personal and social endeavors to shine amid a gritty noir story. And from the director’s comments, it won’t be a stretch to expect something similar from the sequel.
Hopefully, the story, when realized for the big screen, will be able to wow fans and bring something fresh to Batman’s cinematic legacy.
