John Oliver, host of HBO’s Last Week Tonight, spoke at great length regarding Jimmy Kimmel’s firing. He had some scathing words addressed to President Donald Trump:
If we’ve learned nothing else from this administration’s second term so far, and I don’t think we have, is that giving the bully your lunch money doesn’t make him go away. It just makes him come back hungrier each time. They are never going to stop. They’ve literally said that openly.
The firing of Jimmy Kimmel from ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! (owned by Disney) comes after Kimmel’s statement regarding the Charlie Kirk assassination. Oliver even addressed Disney CEO Bob Iger, telling him that history would “remember the cowards who definitely knew better but still let things happen”.
The whole segment can be watched on the official LastWeekTonight YouTube channel.
Since the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, numerous celebrities have come forth in support of Jimmy Kimmel. Kimmel wasn’t the first to be fired from a late-night show.
Jimmy Kimmel’s Suspension Follows a Beloved CBS Show Cancellation
Stephen Colbert announced in July that CBS will be canceling The Late Show in May 2026, more than 10 years after he took over as host. Here are the key details of the show.
CBS’s parent company, Paramount Global, elaborated on the firing in a statement released the same day (via Today):
This is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night. It is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.
Just days before the cancellation, Colbert called a $16 million settlement between CBS and the Trump Administration a “big fat bribe” in his opening monologue on The Late Show.
Following the cancellation of the show, Trump took to Truth Social to post his views on the matter:
I absolutely love that Colbert’ got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings. I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next. Has even less talent than Colbert! Greg Gutfeld is better than all of them combined, including the Moron on NBC who ruined the once great Tonight Show.
President Trump has already voiced his opinions regarding who should be taken off the air next.
Trump Calls for Two More Late Night Show Cancellations
After Kimmel’s suspension, Trump went on Truth Social to post his opinion and shared some more views:
Great News for America: The ratings challenged Jimmy Kimmel Show is CANCELLED. Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done. Kimmel has ZERO talent, and worse ratings than even Colbert, if that’s possible. That leaves Jimmy and Seth, two total losers, on Fake News NBC. Their ratings are also horrible. Do it NBC!!! President DJT
Late-night talk show host Seth Meyers stood in solidarity with Kimmel, calling the act a threat to freedom of speech, during his monologue on September 18, 2025. Meyers is no stranger to political satire, with his Closer Look segment often critiquing President Trump in a humorous vein. Meyers has assured fans that the tone of the show will not change.
Jimmy Fallon usually veers away from political subjects, but he addressed the Jimmy Kimmel situation during his show:
To be honest with you all, I don’t know what’s going on — no one does. But I do know Jimmy Kimmel, and he is a decent, funny and loving guy. And I hope he comes back.
Fallon continued to mock Trump, discussing his recent U.K. visit and also dropping jokes with a censored punchline by the announcer.
The future of talk show television is uncertain. Many have come in support of Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel, voicing their concerns regarding censorship and free speech.
Will Fallon and Meyers be booted off the air, too? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
