Jennifer Lawrence once joked that working with Leonardo DiCaprio was “hell,” but now the Oscar winners are reuniting for a movie adaptation of What Happens at Night, directed by Martin Scorsese (via Deadline). In a 2021 interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Lawrence recounted a particularly rough filming day on the Netflix satire Don’t Look Up. She shared scenes in a car with DiCaprio and Timothée Chalamet. She told Colbert,
Timothée was just excited to be out of the house. It was, like, his first scene. And Leo had picked the song that was playing in the car and was just like, ‘You know, this song is about blah blah blah.’ I just remember being in absolute misery that day. It was hell.
Despite her usual lighthearted complaint, Lawrence has now signed on to star opposite DiCaprio again. And she can’t miss this chance to work with Martin Scorsese, which can outweigh even the toughest shooting days.
What Is Jennifer Lawrence’s New Movie, What Happens At Night, About?
Based on Peter Cameron’s novel, What Happens at Night follows an American couple. They travel to a snow-covered, remote European town to adopt a child. The wife is terminally ill, and her husband fears her condition will jeopardize the adoption.
They check into the eerie Borgarfjaroasysla Grand Imperial Hotel, which is nearly deserted but filled with strange characters. It includes a flamboyant chanteuse, a depraved businessman, and a charismatic faith healer.
As the couple’s wait drags on, their grip on reality begins to fade. The more they fight to hold their family together, the more they unravel mentally. The story blends psychological horror and existential mystery.
The script is penned by Patrick Marber (Notes on a Scandal). The tone of the movie is described as dreamlike and unsettling, reminiscent of Scorsese and DiCaprio’s Shutter Island.
The Apple Original Marks Jennifer Lawrence’s First Project with Martin Scorsese
This movie will be the first time Lawrence stars in a Martin Scorsese-directed film. However, Scorsese recently produced Lawrence’s Cannes-premiered drama Die, My Love, also backed by Apple and set for a fall release via Mubi.
Meanwhile, DiCaprio and Scorsese have a long-standing creative partnership, having collaborated on six previous films. It also includes Killers of the Flower Moon (2023), backed by Apple Original Films.
Filming for What Happens at Night is expected to begin in January 2026, with Apple Original Films in final talks to produce and distribute alongside Studiocanal.
The studio also has first-look deals with both Scorsese’s Sikelia Productions and DiCaprio’s Appian Way. Looks like it is positioning Apple as the go-to home for award-season filmmaking. Take a quick look at the key details of the new movie:
With three Oscar winners at the top, Scorsese, DiCaprio, and Lawrence, this project is already generating major buzz before it heads into production.
