Is Nuremberg Based on a True Story: Russell Crowe Eyes Second Oscar This Time as a Nazi War Criminal

Russell Crowe is probably eyeing a second Oscar award for his role as Hermann Göring in the upcoming 2025 movie, Nuremberg. Based on the true story of the Nuremberg Trials, the film explores the relationship between a U.S. psychiatrist and a Nazi war criminal.

Considering the teaser and how powerful the narrative is, we are pretty sure that Crowe might just win an Oscar for the second time. The movie will also feature Rami Malek as a U.S. psychiatrist. Following World War II, top Nazi officials were put on trial and charged with war crimes and breaking the Geneva Convention.

Nuremberg tells the tale of Herman Göring, who was the commander-in-chief of the Luftwaffe (the German Air Force) and was considered the second most dangerous man in Germany after Adolf Hitler.

However, the film isn’t going to be about the Nuremberg Trials (not the aftermath, at least) since it will be entirely focused on a U.S. psychiatrist and Hermann Göring and the complex relationship that they develop before the trial.

Nuremberg Puts a Nazi War Criminal Against a Psychiatrist

The movie is based on a 2013 non-fiction book, The Nazi and the Psychiatrist by Jack El-Hai. Although rooted in real events, the film does have some dramatized events to heighten the tension, but the two key characters, namely Herman Göring and Douglas Kelly, the U.S. psychiatrist, were real historical figures.

The film’s plot revolves around a psychiatrist’s evaluation of Herman Göring and whether he was sane enough to stand trial. However, he becomes obsessed with Göring while trying to understand evil and forms a disturbing bond with the Nazi war criminal.

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7 and will be released theatrically on November 7, 2025, in the U.S. The first reactions to the film have been quite great, as critics have hailed the movie as one of the finest.

Nuremberg May Have Been Inspired By A 2005 Oscar-Winning Movie

Back in 2005, Philip Seymour Hoffman starred in a biographical film titled Capote. The premise of that film and Nuremberg are indeed on similar terms, although Capote wasn’t a psychiatrist nor did he diagnose a Nazi war criminal.

Instead, Capote developed a bond with a serial killer who had committed the Clutter family murders. Philip Seymour Hoffman won an Oscar for his performance as Truman Capote.

The plot is indeed similar, and it could be true that Nuremberg may take the tonality and certain inspiration from Capote. Nothing bad in that, I mean Capote is one of the finest movies ever made, and considering how impressive Nuremberg is looking, we cannot help but reminisce about the 2005 film that made the trope so great.
