How Old Is Amo in Gachiakuta: Her Full Backstory in the Series, Explained

In Gachiakuta episode 10, fans got their first look at Amo Empool, one of the major characters in the series’ overarching storyline. Although the anime has never confirmed her exact age, and the volume extras list it as “secret,” we can deduce that she’s likely around 15 to 16.

Knowing she’s close to Rudo’s age, who himself seems to be in his mid-teens, Amo might be the same. In fact, this becomes even more convincing as the storyline progresses in future episodes. How? Because later arcs of the manga give much deeper insight into her past, as well as her current ties to the Cleaners. Here’s everything we know about her character so far.

The Tragic Past of Amo Empool in Gachiakuta

Amo’s backstory is one of the darkest in Gachiakuta, which is saying a lot since the series is already so brutal. She never even had a proper childhood, as her mother always struggled to take care of both herself and Amo. Later, she eventually sold her to a man she claimed would love Amo.

This man took her to the Forbidden Zone, Penta, where they lived together in a small house. He worked as a courier to provide for her, and in return, Amo was made to perform certain ‘rituals’ with him; rituals that made her heart race, but not in a good way.

One day, two masked figures broke into the house. They knocked the man out and handed Amo a pair of boots, telling her to treasure them until the time comes. She, however, had no idea what the right time was.

But when the man regained consciousness, it seemed as if the boots already belonged to him, and he accused Amo of stealing them. In a surprising twist, however, the boots had already become Amo’s Vital Instrument (Jinki), and she even used them to kick the man to death.

Later, as she wandered the Ground, she kept watching people come down from Heaven, though she had only ever seen one go back up.

Amo Empool’s Powers Explained

Amo steps into the spotlight as the main antagonist of the Lady of Penta arc. So, certainly, she was quite strong, especially since her powers are linked to her boots, part of the Watchman Series, similar to Rudo’s gloves that Regto passed down to him.

These boots produce different scents that trigger emotions and resurface memories her target might be vulnerable to. But the twist is that Amo can only create scents based on her own life experiences.

Because she spent most of her life trapped inside that house in Penta with that man, her range of emotional experiences is limited, which restricts the number of scents she can produce. Still, the ability is incredibly dangerous. As shown so far, Amo mainly weaponizes it by making her opponent mistake her for the very person they hold dear.

Amo’s Connection to Rudo After Joining the Cleaners

Although Amo first appears as a villain in Gachiakuta, she later joins the Cleaners under the Front section. However, in the recent chapters, we could see her gradually developing a romantic interest in Rudo.

It is true, and quite unavoidable, that her tragic past and distorted view of love will certainly make her feelings complicated. But Rudo’s always-so-genuine nature gives her a sense of security. Maybe, over time, her attachment will grow stronger. And, that won’t be bad, honestly. What do you think?
