During a recent Q&A at the Toronto International Film Festival, iconic director Guillermo del Toro sat down to answer some questions. During the Q&A session that followed the premiere of Frankenstein at TIFF, del Toro announced that his upcoming project is a new crime thriller.
The crime thriller, called Fury, will be a collaboration with Frankenstein star Oscar Isaac. According to Deadline, Guillermo del Toro revealed that the film would be a “very violent” version of the 1981 film, My Dinner With Andre.
It’s going back to sort of thriller aspects of ‘Nightmare Alley,’ very cruel, very violent. Like ‘My Dinner with Andre,’ but killing people after each course.
He continued,
I’m very interested in the violence we do to each other, and we do it with our minds, we do it with our souls and we do it physically.
Well, del Toro’s comparison was quite intriguing since both Nightmare Alley and My Dinner With Andre have been two of the finest rated movies in different genres.
However, it’s interesting to note the comparison that Guillermo del Toro made with My Dinner With Andre, since it is one of those rare movies that notorious critic Roger Ebert gave
Roger Ebert Rated My Dinner With Andre a Solid 4/4

The 1981 film was directed by Louis Malle and followed the story of two people who sit down and talk over an evening meal. The course of their conversation takes an interesting turn since one of them quizzes the other about his values and morals.
Notable critic Roger Ebert gave the film a solid 4/4 rating on his website and called it an interesting turn of events in the conversation between Andre and Wally.
Ebert noted that the film was simply a conversation between two friends who wanted to ‘wake’ the other person up from their lives. However, they both were having a good time, only Wally’s experiences were more… real.

What Guillermo del Toro’s Quote Means For His Upcoming Project

Considering that the director specifically dropped the names of two famous movies, namely My Dinner with Andre and Nightmare Alley, we can certainly expect that the project would be very violent in nature.
The director’s upcoming project also seems to be a tale of regret, redemption, and how humans can sometimes be the worst monsters, as he further said in his statements.
I’m 60 now, so I’ve gone from asking where I’m going, and father and son, to regret. I’m in the regret decade, so expect a lot of regret.
Blending two different genres together seems to be something that del Toro has been experimenting with for quite a while now. However, his upcoming project could potentially be summed up by comparing it with the scene in The Godfather II when Michael Corleone is being christened while the murders and killings are happening as he speaks.
Of course, it remains speculation at this point since the plot of Fury hasn’t been revealed yet. What we do know is that Oscar Isaac will be a part of the project following his work with Guillermo del Toro in Frankenstein.
