Akon has never been open about his marriages, even though he publicly endorsed the idea of polygamy. He had confirmed that he had nine children during a 2022 interview, but did not reveal the number of wives he had. Interestingly, artist Amirror, aka Amirah-Iman Thiam, claimed in a 2023 interview appearance that he had four wives.
She shared that she was one of his four wives during her appearance on Rie Wit The Tea. Amirror shared, “I’m definitely one of…everybody wants to know this number and I don’t know why my husband doesn’t say it but it’s one of four. Akon has four wives.” While she didn’t spill a whole lot of details on these wives of Akon, she shared, “Like we are in Atlanta, we are in LA, we are in Africa as well.”
One of these wives was Tomeka Thiam, who had been with Akon for the last 29 years. They got married on September 15, 1996, and shared a 17-year-old child. TMZ reported that Thiam has filed for divorce from Akon, just days before their 29th anniversary, citing irreconcilable differences.
Akon has largely remained coy on questions about his personal life. During a 2007 interview with Blender, he shared some details of his personal life. He shared at the time that he had four boys and one girl with three baby mamas. He further shared that he had only one wife at the time, which could’ve been Tomeka Thiam.
In 2022, he told Vlad TV during an interview that he had seven boys and two girls. However, he refused to confirm the number of wives he had, sharing that he was going to “let it stay a rumor.”
During his appearance on The Zeze Millz Show, Akon defended Nick Cannon’s lifestyle. Cannon faced brutal criticism for having numerous kids with multiple women. He shared, “I agree with him 1,000 percent. That’s how life is supposed to be. He’s rich, he’s responsible.”
He further added, “He takes care of every one of those children. And the baby mothers are with it, they hurt for nothing and they live comfortably.” He went on to suggest that the Western world put all these rules into marriage without putting nature into account.
Akon and Tomeka Thiam’s Divorce: What Will Happen to Their Only Child?
According to TMZ, it was Tomeka Thiam’s decision to pull the plug on the relationship. From the court documents, it appeared that she was Akon’s first and only legally registered wife. Tomeka claimed that she and Akon shared a 17-year-old child, although her Instagram showed pictures of many of Akon’s children.
As for their still minor child, Journey, Thiam is asking for joint legal custody. However, she wants sole physical custody of her child and is seeking spousal support to look after both of them. She has also filed documents seeking to block Akon’s demand for any spousal support.
Her socials seem to suggest that she also works in the music industry, just like her former husband. It appeared that Tomeka Thiam didn’t complain about Akon’s polygamous lifestyle. Akon recently made a public appearance with Amirror, who claimed in 2023 that she was also his wife.
What Did Akon’s Alleged Fourth Wife Say About His Lifestyle?
During Amirror’s appearance on Rie Wit The Tea, she was asked about how Akon’s wives managed his polygamous lifestyle. She explained that it was in accordance with Akon’s religious beliefs. She shared, “I mean it’s in the book of life, you can look in the Quran.”
When the interviewer confirmed again whether he slept with all four of them at the same time, she nodded and said, “All four of us yeah.” She further explained her relationship with the other wives. She shared:
See like me when it comes to me, when it comes to him stepping out, I’m not speaking out on anybody else, coz I don’t know what they say, I don’t know what they go through, we all have different households we all have different lifestyles and obviously me, I’m the only one that has the biggest entertainer, because I’m the biggest type sh* one you get what I’m saying, I’m doing it for us all.
When asked to explain, she shared that she didn’t need the other wives to like her to accept her. She shared, “What I’m saying is none of us have problems with each other, we all worry about our own issues.” She further defended Akon’s lifestyle, sharing, “Akon is the type of man he knows how to ..its not manipulation, it’s just you ain’t gotta f* with him. I was raised in a Muslim home from my father so this is our culture you know.”
Although up for debate, Amirror’s interview shared a rare glimpse into the unknown realities of Akon’s alleged polygamous lifestyle. However, these claims have never been fully confirmed by Akon himself.
