Chris Pratt really caught fire with Hollywood’s rumor mill back in 2015-16 when the talk of the town was that he was allegedly cheating on his then-wife, Anna Faris, with Jennifer Lawrence, his co-star from his 2016 film, Passengers. Apparently, after looking at their chemistry onscreen, many were convinced of their alleged on-set affair while he was still married to Faris.
At the time, Faris even opened up about those rumors with Us Weekly, calling them “weirdly stinging.” She said back then (via Entertainment Tonight on YouTube),
It’s been a little devastating because for us, it’s like, ‘What the heck?’ This has been blindsiding to us. We have an incredible relationship.
However, the surprising part is that Pratt and Faris actually ended up divorced within two years of these cheating rumors surfacing, in 2017. This further had people talking about any possible affair between him and Jennifer Lawrence. But while those rumors couldn’t be far from the truth in real life, as confirmed by Faris herself, she still felt “hurt” by them.
Anna Faris Felt “Hurt” by the Chris Pratt Cheating Rumors
While all those talks about love brewing between Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence weren’t true, it still didn’t take long before Anna Faris found herself affected by it all. In her memoir, Unqualified, the actress detailed how those rumors took a toll on her despite not holding even an ounce of truth to them. She wrote (via Stylist),
I talked to Chris about how hurt I felt, even though I knew there was no truth to the stories, and he didn’t understand at first… I didn’t want to pay attention to the stories but I couldn’t block them all out, either. I’d always taken pride in our relationship, and the coverage, even though it was just false rumours, was making me feel insecure. Eventually, Chris came around and understood why it felt s***ty.
Around a year prior to her divorce, Faris also got candid about how the Guardians of the Galaxy star’s sudden rise in fame had put a strain on their marriage, even though many fans held them up as the ideal #relationshipgoals. As she opened up on her podcast Anna Faris is Unqualified in December 2016 (via Entertainment Tonight),
We grapple with the idea of being a public couple. There were some tabloid rumours about strain on our relationship. I just remember feeling so hurt in a way that bothered me because I didn’t want to think of myself as somebody that could be affected by tabloid s**t. There was a picture of me walking alone on the beach: ‘Ageing Anna Faris, Alone on the Beach.’
That, of course, sounds brutal enough to leave anyone insecure about themselves, and the Scary Movie actress, for one, was no exception. If anything, that entire turn of events eventually caught up to her, making her feel “vulnerable” even when none of the rumors were true. She continued,
I take pride in how great my relationship is with Chris, but having said that, of course, in this crazy world where he’s off doing movies and I’m in LA raising our child, of course, I’m going to feel vulnerable, like any normal human would… And it did make me feel like, ‘Is public perception – even though it’s false – is there a grain of something?’ It made me feel incredibly insecure.
Just like that, despite being mere gossip, all those words on the street ended up affecting Pratt’s relationship with Faris in a way, considering just how affected she was by it all.
Chris Pratt and Anna Faris Divorced in 2017
Despite being one of the most shipped-together power couples of all time, Anna Faris and Chris Pratt saw their marriage falling apart within a decade of falling in love with each other. It was reported by PEOPLE in December 2017 that the Parks and Recreation star had filed legal documents to end his 8-year marriage with Faris, citing irreconcilable differences.
Per TMZ, the Mom actress filed her response shortly after her then-husband, with both of them asking for joint custody of their son, Jack, and her asking for the right to receive child support. The two even reportedly had a prenuptial agreement, and a property settlement was finalized soon after their filing for a divorce. The separation date was listed as July 13, a month before they publicly announced that they were separating.
In a joint statement issued by Pratt in August 2017, the couple said (via Facebook),
Anna and I are sad to announce we are legally separating. We tried hard for a long time, and we’re really disappointed. Our son has two parents who love him very much and for his sake we want to keep this situation as private as possible moving forward. We still have love for each other, will always cherish our time together and continue to have the deepest respect for one another.
The couple first met back in 2007, on the sets of their film together, Take Me Home Tonight. Love didn’t take too long to brew between the two, as 2 years later, they were married. In 2012, their son, Jack, was born. They stayed together for eight years before finally parting ways.
Anna Faris Never Once Blamed Jennifer Lawrence For Her Divorce
Though the cheating rumors did make her feel “like a fool,” Anna Faris was quick to clear the air surrounding her feelings toward Jennifer Lawrence. Taking to her book, she informed her readers that she never once blamed the No Hard Feelings actress for what happened between her and her now-ex-husband, nor thought of her as a ‘villain’ or the ‘other woman.’
Faris wrote in her book (via Stylist),
Jennifer and I really are friendly, and she was apologetic even though she didn’t need to be, because she hadn’t done anything wrong. He’s awesome, but of course it’s hurtful and also embarrassing when people are saying your husband is cheating on you – even if it’s patently untrue. You still feel, and look, like a fool.
Lawrence herself, on the other hand, confidently took a stand to shut down all false speculation about her personal life and Pratt’s potential interference in it. She adamantly denied any kind of secret relationship between the two, speaking out in an interview with KISS FM (via The Standard):
I never had an affair with Chris Pratt on Passengers. That’s a good one. I mean, they got a divorce like two years later, and everybody was like, ‘Jennifer Lawrence!’ And I was like, ‘What the…what I’m in Montreal two years later.’
Plus, she also confirmed that the on-screen lovers from Passengers kept it 100% platonic in real life, so that’s that too!
Anna Faris and Chris Pratt Are Still “Great Friends” After Split
Although the two found themselves drifting away from each other, leading to their eventual split, Anna Faris confirmed soon after her divorce from Chris Pratt that the two had decided to continue on amicable terms. If anything, though they are no longer a couple, they are still very good friends.
During her appearance on Live! With Kelly and Ryan, The House Bunny actress got candid about the same, sharing,
We’re great and he’s amazing. It was so kind of him to do that. We’re great friends and always will be.
Not to mention, he even penned down the foreword for her book. In another interview with PEOPLE, she added,
We’ll always have each other and be incredible friends. There is still so much laughter in our lives together, and he is so proud of me, still. We watched each other grow, and he still cracks me up all the time. And I think I crack him up – unless he’s a really good actor and great at faking laughter.
Since then, both Faris and Pratt have moved on in their respective lives. While Pratt moved on with his current wife and the daughter of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Catherine Schwarzenegger, whom he married in 2019, Faris moved on with Michael Barrett, her current husband since 2021.
