With his physique and fitness levels, Chris Hemsworth can easily pull off any stunt you throw at him; however, there was one time when Disney had to intervene and stop him from doing something completely crazy.
Hemsworth took a little break from saving the world and decided to learn how to live better through Limitless, a documentary series for National Geographic, where the actor discovers the many ways humans have used to improve their health.
For the series, Hemsworth was all set to surf a giant wave at Jaws, but due to safety concerns, Disney refused to provide the insurance for the stunt. He told Surfer.com,
So, it was supposed to be at Jaws. We had the Walsh brothers involved to help out. And we couldn’t get the insurance from Disney. They were like, ‘nah…we’ll let you do all this other crazy shit.’ But big wave surfing, they felt there were too many variables.
He added that there might come a time when he’d try surfing the giant wave again, preferably when he’s “injury-free and feeling fit and healthy.” Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Hemsworth stated that he was going to attempt to surf a 40-foot wave, but due to concerns from above and his Thor duties, the idea was scrapped.
Would Chris Hemsworth Rather Be a Surfer than an Actor?
It’s difficult to imagine Hollywood without Chris Hemsworth, but if he had the chance, he probably would have switched things up and taken up surfing as a full-time career.
During the interview with Surfer.com, Hemsworth was asked if he could go back in time and change the route of his professional life, to which he replied, “I have neither the talent, or the commitment that some of these men and women have today.“
Despite his self-awareness, Hemsworth remembers being obsessed with the pro tour and the surfers as a teenager. He added, “Then, reality hits you quickly, and you realize that you’re not one of the gifted few.” Regardless, if he could “wave the magic wand“, he would “probably choose the surf career.” In his words,
No complaints with the path I’ve chose. But how about this – instead of career choice, let’s think about it like talent choice. I’d rather be doing what these surfers are doing on waves, than what I’m doing. I just sit back, and watch in awe. I get a huge kick out of it.
He sure has the looks for it! While he couldn’t become a surfer, at least Limitless allows him to do everything he has ever wanted to.
The Limitless Stunt That Caused Marvel to Step in and Pull the Plug
While training for one of Limitless‘ challenges, Hemsworth ended up injuring his ankle, causing Marvel Studios to step in and pull the plug on the whole deal.
On Jimmy Kimmel Live, Hemsworth revealed that he was all set to film the show before Thor, that is, until he badly hurt his ankle and Marvel said ‘No’. He recalled, “I said, ‘Great, we’ll do it before I shoot ‘Thor’. Anyway, I started training, I blow my ankle out, and Marvel stepped in and said, ‘No. The show that might kill him, you can do that after our film.’“
The stunt in question involved Hemsworth climbing on top of a cable car using a rope that dangled 100 feet below it. The intensity of the height, combined with the actor using his muscles to lift himself up, made the stunt even more intense than it had to be.
To add to it all, he was in peak Thor shape, the bulkiness of his physique proving to be another drawback. He remembered his trainer looking at him and going, “You’re screwed. This is going to be the hardest thing you’ve ever done.”
