Despite the negative reviews and backlash from fans, it appears that Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers is not leaving the MCU. A Marvel insider has now provided insights into Larson’s role as Captain Marvel in the upcoming Multiverse Saga finale films. According to Alex Perez of The Cosmic Circus, Captain Marvel will have a major role in these films.
When a fan asked about the recent rumors about the character being recast or being replaced by Monica Rambeau/Kamala Khan, Perez replied, “No. That’s not something I see happening to Carol.”
This isn’t the first time that Perez responded confidently to Captain Marvel’s return to the MCU post the flopped film, The Marvels. In October 2024, he was asked during a Q&A session whether Larson’s character would appear in Spider-Man 4 and Shang-Chi 2.
The fan’s question was relevant since the director of these films, Destin Daniel Cretton, and Larson are frequent collaborators. She had a role in three of Cretton’s pre-MCU films, including Short Term 12, The Glass Castle, and Just Mercy. Perez responded that he “wouldn’t be surprised” if the actress showed up in Tom Holland’s upcoming film.
However, he shared that the character’s “best bet for the next appearance” would be in Avengers: Doomsday. When asked about her role in the Avengers film at that time, Perez shared, “She will be one of the leading Avengers in these movies, yes.”
Where Did the Rumors of Recasting Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel Come From?
Recently, speculations arose that MCU’s Captain Marvel might get recast. Neither the actress Brie Larson nor her character Captain Marvel received love from the audience in recent times. Larson’s public expression of her political views faced criticism from fans and movie enthusiasts.
However, the report on X from @MCUSource was immediately shut down by other users in the context. These users claimed that no sources or news outlets have reported the recasting of the character.

Rumors aside, Larson didn’t seem to be too sure about her MCU future. She was notably absent from the roster for the upcoming Avengers film, and she has largely avoided talking about her Marvel role in recent times. Before her absence from the Avengers: Doomsday roster, speculations arose that Brie Larson could possibly quit the role after the hate she received for both her MCU appearances.
It was also suggested in the book, MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, that she “grew disillusioned” with her role (via ScreenRant). The author of the book, Joanna Robinson, later shared on The Watch podcast:
[Marvel Studios] put Brie Larson in [a prominent place in the MCU]. I don’t know if Brie Larson was the wrong person for the role, necessarily. But the toxic backlash means that Brie Larson doesn’t want to play Carol Danvers anymore.
When Extra asked about her upcoming MCU projects at the 2024 SAG Awards, she simply shook her head and said, “I don’t have anything to say about that.”
Brie Larson Earlier Hinted At a Possible Return to Her Marvel Role
Brie Larson gave a cryptic answer during an earlier interview that hinted at her possible return when asked about her future Marvel plans. Speaking to The Playlist’s Bingeworthy podcast, she shared that she had a great time with Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani.
The Lessons in Chemistry star further shared that she knew things that she couldn’t reveal to the public. She shared, “I just loved being with those ladies so much… And you know, as for the future, there’s things that I know, but I can’t tell you.” (via Yahoo! Entertainment).
During an interview with ET, she shared that there was “still so much inside of Carol” to explore. She shared, “I feel like getting to be on this team just cracked her open in a way that she hadn’t been and I really loved that for her.”
Brie Larson’s The Marvels ended its theatrical run with $206 million at the box office. It is a decent enough number for any other film, not to mention that it’s the highest-grossing movie in director Nia DaCosta’s filmography.
However, the budget of the film was enormously high, making it a huge box office bomb. According to Forbes, Disney made the film on a gross budget of $374 million.
