Fans of George R.R. Martin may not be happy with the author’s latest update on The Winds of Winter, casually revealing he’s working on the novel alongside another writing project.
In his interview with The Hollywood Reporter, where he spoke about his several investments, such as a movie theater, a bookshop, a cocktail bar, and a railway tourist attraction, Martin refuted people’s talk on the Internet about him giving up on his highly anticipated novel:
I just want to make one thing clear. While I’m an investor and an owner in some of these things, I do not run them on a daily basis. Every time I announce something on the internet, there’s all this crazy talk. ‘Oh, he’s giving up writing the books!’ But I’m still writing. The [sixth] novel, the ‘Dunk and Egg’ story — those are what I’m focused on.
While it’s comforting to hear that he continues to write The Winds of Winter, it’s quite a surprise that Martin is already working on his next Dunk and Egg novella after he confessed he’s struggling with completing the sixth book of the A Song of Ice and Fire
GRRM’s Attention Remains Divided Amid Fans’ Clamor For The Winds of Winter
The success of his best-selling novel series, as well as Game of Thrones, allowed Martin to expand the world he has created by producing more live-action adaptations set in the world of Westeros. Not only that, he’s also earned enough fortune to acquire several investments, such as those mentioned above.
With so many things on his plate, fans are already assuming that he’s got little time to write The Winds of Winter, as the author stated in his interview. For a novel 14 years late already, Martin is expected to focus his undivided attention on his novel.
He’s already told fans before that the book remains his top priority, but his timetable is clearly packed with several commitments that aren’t exactly related to The Winds of Winter.
From attending conventions to supervising the next HBO series, Martin refuses to set them aside first to make more time for his novel. At this point, fans are more eager to read The Winds of Winter than the next entry in the Tales of Dunk and Egg series.
Martin Breaks Promise Not to Write Anything Until The Winds of Winter Is Done
The author is quite infamous for breaking his promise to fans, which is not picking up any other project until he delivers The Winds of Winter. He once wrote in a comment on his website, Not A Blog:
I am not writing anything until I deliver WINDS OF WINTER. Teleplays, screenplays, short stories, introductions, forewords, nothing. And I’ve dropped all my editing projects but Wild Cards.
He said it again in another blog entry:
I just need to finish THE WINDS OF WINTER, and then do either A DREAM OF SPRING or volume two of FIRE & BLOOD, and slip in a new Dunk & Egg between each of those in my copious spare time.
Yet, here we are, Martin announcing he’s writing another Dunk and Egg novella despite his struggle finishing The Winds of Winter. While some fans admitted they are still looking forward to the book, others have clearly given up waiting already.
