Arrowhead’s “Bad” Enemy Design Is Hitting Helldivers 2 Where It Hurts the Most

Helldivers 2 is one of the better action games out there right now, but if you’re a player, you know that the game isn’t in the best condition at present. The latest Major Order has sent Helldivers to fight the Automatons, but it seems like the Automaton War Strider isn’t the most balanced enemy right now. Is Arrowhead paying attention?

This comes at a bad time, as Arrowhead Game Studios is already under fire from players because of the growing technical debt and overall lack of communication from the developers. It seems like the game is back to a state where only another 60-day plan can save it. Your move, Arrowhead.

The Current Automaton Meta Is Forcing Helldivers to Use the Same Loadouts

The War Strider is not your average Automaton bot. This heavily armored enemy lobs grenades that ragdoll Helldivers left and right, and it’s as disruptive as you can imagine. What’s worse, the Strider doesn’t have conventional, clear weak points like the Hulks or Annihilator tanks.

As one player put it on the Reddit post, Striders have “Heavy Pen 4 throughout their build

,” meaning most weapons barely scratch them. And as you’d expect from such a situation, this has created a meta-problem. Players are venting about how the Striders are forcing them to use anti-tank support weapons like the Recoilless Rifle or Quasar Cannon.

The worst part is that it’s not like there’s no alternative to these weapons. It’s just that the alternatives like the 110mm Rocket Pods, AMR, or even orbital strikes, are just worse than them, or just straight up bad. “War Striders literally kill loadout diversity,” is what u/Professional-Fig-181 had to say on Reddit.

Arrowhead Might Need to Bring Back the 60 Day Plan to Fix the Game

The timing of this couldn’t be worse. We finally got an Automaton-themed Major Order as Operation “Capitalized Industry” came out this week. And while players have made quick progress, the MO has brought this issue with the Strider to light. Even our hopes for the Strategic Opportunity to give us a new Stratagem have been shattered.

At the point with helldivers where i literally cannot go through a match without the game freezing for 10s at a time and repeatedly booting ppl out and causing graphical issues for all my friends. dude what is going on with this game rn with optimization.

Ironically, this issue comes at a time when players are excited to fight the bots. After weeks of dealing with the nightmarish Terminid Rupture Strain, we welcomed the Automaton Major Order with fresh energy. But if this balance issue isn’t addressed soon, there will be no point to any of the player hype.

Player numbers in freefall due to server crashes and broken socials. Rapidly dropped from 160k to 60k over the past hour and still dropping. Someone wake up Arrowhead. #Helldivers2 pic.twitter.com/rUvPnQChnm

On the bright side (or the opposite), Arrowhead has been in this situation before. The game was in a similar trench last year, and to fix it, the studio launched a structured 60-day plan to roll out regular updates, tweak balance, and other changes that brought player confidence back.

If Arrowhead wants to keep players’ sentiments on the good side as the game goes through another rough patch, revisiting that 60-day plan could be the answer. We need more transparency from Arrowhead, but do the devs know that?
