The legend of Amityville is getting another shot at redemption, this time at the hands of Swedish filmmaker David F. Sandberg. The director behind such low-budget horror classics as Lights Out (2016) and Annabelle: Creation (2017) is now attached to helm the movie for Amazon MGM Studios [Deadline].
The movie will serve as a reimagining of the original Amityville classic, The Amityville Horror, which in turn was adapted from Jay Anson’s 1977 book of the same name. The paranormal folklore attached to the story also got a recent boost in popularity due to The Conjuring: Last Rites
Amazon Funds a Reboot of the Classic Amityville Horror IP

Amazon MGM Studios is developing a new horror property based on the Amityville haunting. Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing, who wrote the script for Last Rites, will now pen the story for the new Amityville horror movie.
David F. Sandberg’s wife, Lotta Losten, The Safran Company’s Peter Safran, Natalia Safran, and John Rickard will also be producers.
The film will be based on the famed case that follows the 1974 slaying, where Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered 6 of his family members in Amityville, New York. A year later, George and Kathy Lutz move into the same house along with their three children, unaware of its dark history, and soon begin to experience a series of unsettling paranormal phenomena.
Another Amityville project is also being developed and is unattached to the Amazon IP. It will be funded by the producers of the 2025 cult hit, Weapons and Heart Eyes.
No release date has been announced yet for the developing movie.
