It was earlier believed that NBC fired him after his racist joke on Wild ‘n Out in 2017. However, he shared that when NBC threatened to fire him, he chose to quit the show.
He shared, “I literally stepped away from America’s Got Talent and everybody was like, ‘Yo, this is the biggest mistake of your entire career.’” According to Cannon, people told him that jobs like AGT, with a $20 million deal, don’t come around easily.
He further stated that Howard Stern and Simon Cowell tried to convince him to stay. They told him, “Keep that job.” However, he told them that he knew his worth. He also revealed that he instead went over to Fox and became part of a bigger show. He was referring to his hosting gig on The Masked Singer.
Cannon further mentioned that everybody was against his decision to quit AGT, which put him in a dark place at the time. He said, “I am like, ‘Wait, am I making bad decision?’ Cause I was trying to stand up for my freedom of speech and stand up for my culture and all of that stuff.”
Cannon rose to prominence by becoming the youngest staff writer on All That, a sketch show. He followed it up with The Nick Cannon Show and Wild ‘N Out.
