Alien: Romulus Sequel Eyes 2023’s Best Horror Movie Director After Fede Álvarez’s Refusal

Sad news all around as Alien: Romulus director Fede Álvarez has refused to helm a sequel to the movie and instead wants to pass the baton to someone else.

Well, it seems that Álvarez may have found the next director in Demián Rugna, an Argentine director known for his work on the 2023 film, When Evil Lurks. The iconic horror film received an astonishing rating of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside an intriguing story to boot.

Besides being a director, Rugna is also an editor and a screenwriter of films and is predominantly known in the horror genre. Despite the fame and acclaim that Alien: Romulus brought to Fede Álvarez, it is surprising that the director doesn’t plan on helming the franchise again.

Why Alien: Romulus Became a One-Hit Wonder for Fede Álvarez?

Alien: Romulus was a runaway hit that revived the franchise from its gloomy depths. Fans appreciated the fresh take that Álvarez had for the movie, but following his work, the director revealed that he would be stepping out of it.

During his talks with SFF Gazette, Álvarez stated that it was always his plan to have a one-hit wonder for the Alien franchise and pass the baton to someone else because that’s the way it has been.

I don’t think I was ever going to. We always knew right when we finished – this is one of those things where you come in, and you do one, and get out. Cameron, Fincher. all those directors I love, they went and did one.

Well, that’s certainly disappointing to hear, especially since Fede Álvarez essentially gave life to the iconic franchise. His talk about the future of the Alien franchise and crossovers was something that gave the people hope.

What Fede Álvarez’s Exit Means for the Alien vs. Predator Movie

Well, following the success of Dan Trachtenberg’s Predator movies alongside Fede Álvarez’s Alien: Romulus, there were talks of a crossover between the two franchises to create a reboot of the Alien vs Predator movies.

There were several hints and speculations as both Trachtenberg and Álvarez talked about their side of the alleged crossover. Of course, with Fede Álvarez moving out of the way, it seems that there might be some delays in the Alien vs Predator movies. Maybe Demián Rugna could potentially step in and replace Fede Álvarez, but it will be tough.

Of course, it remains speculation at the moment, but what we can say for certain is that Fede Álvarez doesn’t plan on helming another Alien project as a director.
